We recently celebrated the incredible success of our Ubunifu Cohort at the Mombasa Open Tong-Il Moo-Do International Martial Arts Championship 2025. Now, we’re thrilled to go behind the medals and introduce you to the brilliant minds and unwavering spirits of our two champions: Zulekha Mayu (Silver Medalist, Women’s Sparring under 24) and John Kiragu (Winner, Men’s Sparring, 18–24).
We sat down with them to uncover their secrets to discipline, resilience, and what it truly takes to succeed on a global stage.
Zulekha Mayu: The Power of Focus
The Brilliant Feminine: Zulekha, congratulations on your Silver Medal! What’s your secret to maintaining discipline during intense training periods?
Zulekha: Thank you! For me, it’s all about setting clear, small goals. Instead of thinking about the big championship, I focus on mastering one technique each week, or improving my endurance by just one minute each day. These small wins build momentum. And also, visualization is key. Before every spar, I close my eyes and see myself executing the perfect move.
The Brilliant Feminine: That’s powerful! What advice would you give to young girls who are just starting out in martial arts and might feel intimidated?
Zulekha: Don’t be afraid to fail! Every missed kick or block is a lesson. Also, find a good mentor – someone who believes in you even when you doubt yourself. Instructor Lona was that for me. And remember, your strength isn’t just physical; it’s in your mind and your spirit.
John Kiragu: The Drive to Excel
The Brilliant Feminine: John, a huge congratulations on being the Winner in your category! What do you do to stay motivated and resilient, especially when facing tough competition?
John: The biggest thing for me is understanding my “why.” Why am I training so hard? It’s not just for the medal; it’s for the personal growth, the respect I gain, and to inspire others. When training gets tough, I remind myself of that purpose. As for resilience, I tell myself that every defeat or setback is just information, not a final judgment. It tells me what I need to work on.
The Brilliant Feminine: Excellent perspective. What’s your top tip for aspiring athletes in terms of balancing training with other life commitments, like school?
John: Time management is non-negotiable. I plan my week meticulously, dedicating specific blocks for training, studying, and rest. It’s also crucial to have a support system – family, friends, and instructors who understand your commitments. Don’t be afraid to ask for help or adjustments when you need them. And never compromise on your rest; that’s when your body truly recovers and gets stronger.

- Set Small, Achievable Goals: Build momentum with consistent effort.
- Visualize Success: Mental preparation is just as important as physical training.
- Embrace Failure as a Lesson: Every setback is an opportunity to learn and grow.
