The Maralal International Camel Derby is known worldwide for its vibrant display of culture and sport. This year, however, the sands of Samburu witnessed something even more powerful: a united front against Gender-Based Violence (GBV).
In a captivating partnership, the Kenya Tong-IL Moo-Do Federation (KTMF) and The Brilliant Feminine joined forces to demonstrate how martial arts can be the ultimate tool for women’s empowerment.
Commended by National Leadership
The demonstration was performed in the presence of esteemed guests, including the Chief Guest, Cabinet Secretary for Tourism and Wildlife, Rebecca Miano.
CS Rebecca Miano praised the innovative approach of The Brilliant Feminine. She highlighted that utilizing sports—specifically the discipline of martial arts—to tackle sensitive social issues like GBV is a forward-thinking strategy that resonates deeply with the needs of the modern Kenyan woman.

The Power of the Demonstration
Led by Elvis Malipe Ole Mpakuanik (Assistant Secretary-General, KTMF) and expert instructors Salma Ali Abdallah and Lona Apiyo Abiero, the team showcased:
- Self-Defense Excellence: Practical techniques for safety and protection.
- Inner Discipline: The mental clarity and confidence that martial arts instills.
- Unified Strength: Showing that when organizations collaborate, the message of empowerment becomes twice as loud.
A Growing Footprint: New Club Launch
The event wasn’t just about a single performance; it was about sustainable growth. In a massive win for the region, KTMF announced the launch of a new Tong-IL Moo-Do club in Samburu County.
This expansion ensures that the skills showcased at the Derby—discipline, defense, and leadership—are now accessible to even more community members year-round.
Our Shared Mission
Co-founded by Twalib Rashid and Halima Abdikadir, The Brilliant Feminine was born out of a desire to create a safer, more equitable Samburu. This partnership with the Federation marks a significant milestone in that journey.
“At the Camel Derby, we didn’t just show our skills; we showed our resolve. We are turning a world-class sporting event into a world-class platform for social change.” — The Brilliant Feminine Leadership
